A brief history of the Annan Gallery...
Thomas Annan founded T&R Annan and Sons as a photography studio in 1855 and in 1857 moved to premises in Sauchiehall Street.
Much of the business at that time came from photographing country Houses and Mansions around Glasgow as well as photographing paintings whilst at the houses.
General landscape views were photographed then sold as individual prints bound into albums.
The firm was the official photographers for the Glasgow Exhibitions of 1888, 1901, and 1911 and awarded the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria.
The Gallery side of the firm flourished in the late 1800's when a major new painting would be borrowed from an artist or collector. It then became a great social occasion to view this piece in a dimly lit room then purchase a photogravure print of it.
This gradually evolved into selling paintings and etchings rather than just prints. Many famous artists have exhibited at Annan's over the years (including a show by L.S.Lowry in 1946).
Over the years, the Annan has become renowned for being at the forefront of promoting the very best of Scottish contemporary art, a tradition that carries on today.

In 2006, the Annan family handed on the fine art side of the business to Ann and Ian Donaldson in order to concentrate on the photography side of the business. Ann and Ian brought the Annan to its current location in Woodlands Road and in 2017, following Ann and Ian's retirement, the gallery was taken on by current owners, Scott and Susan Bennett, who also own and run The Strathearn Gallery in Crieff.
"We have a great love of art and are passionate about promoting the very best of it through our galleries. The Scottish Art scene is vibrant and strong with a wide range of very talented and successful artists working today.
We have a worldwide client base and following and understand the enjoyment a piece of good art can bring to you and your home. Gordon Wilson is one of our top artists and we always have busy (and fun) exhibitions with Gordon. His work has a tremendous depth to it but most importantly, it always makes you smile when you see it"
